Ceramic is a slow, even conductor. It takes a moment to warm, then holds its temperature across the whole plate surface. That evenness is the point. A hot spot, a small area running hotter than its neighbors, overheats whatever strand passes over it, and the user never sees it happen.

Keratin works from the structural side. It is the same protein hair is made of. Heated keratin released from a plate surface settles into gaps and cracks in the cuticle, temporarily filling them. Technique: What the Dial Cannot Do Alone
Temperature is the first lever, but three habits decide whether the setting actually protects the hair.
Start dry. Water trapped inside a strand turns to steam the moment the plates close. Steam expands and blows the cuticle open from inside. That is why straightening damp hair causes instant damage, and why every manual says dry hair only.
Shield the strand. A heat protectant spray applied evenly over dry hair, can held about 6 inches from the scalp, locks in moisture and gives the surface a buffer. It is not optional insurance. It is the difference between a pass that costs the hair a little and a pass that costs it a lot.
Limit the passes. Two or three per section is the ceiling. If hair is not straight after three, the temperature is too low, so raise it one step instead of dragging the same section through again. Repetition is cumulative damage wearing a different name.
Preparation shapes all of this. Wash with a moisturizing shampoo, dry with a microfiber towel, then blow-dry completely, roots first, lengths after. Price differences among flat irons are real, but they do not always land where people expect.
A budget ceramic flat iron in the $15-40 range often carries what used to be mid-range features. The cord deserves attention too. Wrapping it tightly around the tool stresses the joint where it meets the housing, the most common failure point on budget irons. Loop it loosely instead. A 450F tool used at 300F can last a decade of good hair days. A 365F tool used on hair that cannot take 365F does damage every single morning. The most telling spec on the box is not the maximum temperature. It is the size of the step between settings, because that step is where judgment gets expressed.
